Journal #2
Teaching practicum II
Intermediate English I
Teacher: Ana Elisa Jiménez

In this class, I was really motivated about teaching. I liked being with my students as always.
 Something that I want to describe about the lesson that went well was that I tried to transmit enthusiasm to the students during the class. At the beginning, all the students were able to participate in my class. I tried to do my best when teaching as I learned from my teachers, and that is why the class was nice. We worked in two speaking and writing activities related to the use of present simple and present continuous. The students enjoyed the class.
 Something that didn’t go well was that there were two students that were afraid about participating speaking English in the activities I asked them to do. The teacher told me that those students are very timid, and that’s a big problem for them because they have to speak English. She asked me to try to look for techniques to make them participate.
 The students were bored for a while because they had to work in the exercises that were in the appendices. At the beginning some students couldn’t do the exercises, but later on, they understood the exercises and continued working in the following exercises without any problem.
 I used some activities in the class, and some materials, but I didn’t use the board too much, and I didn’t use pictures. They were working in groups. They created a story, and then they passed to the front to narrate the story they created.

 Almost all of students were on the task. They worked on oral and on written exercises practicing the structure taught in the previous class. They showed how much they had learned from the topic.

 I couldn’t manage the time well, but I could work in all the activities I planned. The students worked in groups of four. There were some students that had some problems at the moment of creating the story, but then they could do it finally.

 If I teach that lesson again, I will use more materials to make the students understand better. I will also look for some other activities to make all the students participate speaking without shyness because there were two very timid students that didn’t want to participate.

  1. Well, teacher Edward. I can see that you are showing your enthusiasm as always in your English classes. Remember that we are the model for our students.
I recommend yuo to use more active activities because of the time they have classes with you. Sometimes students don't feel comfortable and it is a problem for teachers to keep students alert in a class.

You can use some contest, group games, discussion topics, a vocabulary race, drills that can help you to make your class different and you can create a better and confortable environment.

    Congrats my friend, go ahead!!

  3. Hello teacher Edward!! I think that you are doing a great job because as you said, you are transmitting enthusiasm to the students. I think that if you continue like that, the students that are shy will change their personality thanks to the environment you are creating in your class!!

  4. It is really nice to see that you make your students want to participate in class, and the better thing is that they learn by playing some activities.I know this is one of the most difficult thing when teaching, but you see you`re reaching your objectives in this level. Remember that students learn better if they see a picture instead of a lot of words, so you should try to bring more visual material to get not only their attention, but also to make them understand better the class.

  5. Good job Edward!
As I can see all of us are working hard in our classes. To be enthusiastic is a nice characteristic a teacher can have because this makes the class less boring, however there will be cases is which we have to balance our enthusiasm. It is great to know that your students are engaged in every activity you do. This is nice because they learn more. Something that we all have faced is the fact ok keeping track of time. Because time flies when we are teaching, it is hard for us to keep track of time, but something that has helped me is to set the time according to the importance or priority of the activities. Free practice exercises for example, should take more time than controlled practice exercises. I know thath we are learning and every clas help us to see what things we can contiunue doing and what others we better don't do again.
    Continue working hard.

  6. It sounds like a nice class! I know you, and all I can see is that you're very enthusiastic! It's something that many of us would like to have. I think that there's always a shy person in each group. My advice is, when they participate somehow, even if it's a short intervention, congratulate them as much as possible so that they feel like they can do anything and that their effort counts. It's hard to find the right technique with this type of student, though. Good luck with that, Edward. Keep working like this! :)
