TEACHING PRACTICUM II
INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH I
TEACHER KAREN DE ORELLANA
Another group, another experience. This class was nice because I could do some activities that I had never done before. My students enjoyed those activities because they practiced their English in oral form and actively.
• Something that I want to describe about the lesson that went well was that the students loved the activities I carried out to the classroom because they were moving around the classroom and speaking English among them.
• Something that didn’t go well was that I developed part of the lesson plan that I didn’t have to develop. The teacher told me that I have to be careful when working with the lesson plans because there are some lesson plans that are confused.
• I felt I reached the objectives of this lesson because at the end of the classes all the students were practicing the Simple past in oral form. I made the students work in groups of four. Then I gave them a page in which they had to draw whatever they wanted to. When they finished, they created a story using the drawings they had. It was really nice to see all of them speaking
• I used some materials to make the students understand the class very well. I used pictures, the board, markers, bond paper.
• I couldn’t manage the time well because the activities I made were too long and that’s why I couln’t develop all of the activities I carried out to the class. When I saw my watch, it was 4: 40pm, and I had not finished with the activities.
• If I teach this lesson again, I will use more didactic material because when I was teaching the use of simple past and past continuous, the students were a little confused. Thank God they understood those grammar structures.

Hi teacher Ed!!
ResponderEliminarI think that visual aids help students understand more, especially if the grammar structure is kind of complicated for them. As we know, the past tense can be a little confusing for students because they study regular and irregular verbs. What you can do is to bring all the necessary pictures to explain actions in the past tense. When you show a picture to the students, you are calling their attention and in this moment, they are learning in a better way!
I think that all of us have had problems with the time we have to develop all the activities. I remember that a tutor teacher suggested me to tell the students the time they have to develop every activity. For example, if they are ordering some scrambled sentences, you can say to them "You have 5 min to order these sentences". In this way, they know that after five minutes, the teacher is goint to begin asking for the sentences.
My question was What can I do if most of the students have not finished in five minutes? The teacher told me that I can give them 2 more minutes, but not more!
Well, what I can tell you is that it has worked for me!!
Edward, I think that Lili is right when she says that pictures and other kinds of materials are very important when teaching, especially when teaching English grammar.
ResponderEliminarIt is better to show students pictures in order to call their attention because in this way you are avoiding distractions. They are focused on what you are doing, and what you are saying to them at the time you explain something to them.
Remember that not all the groups work the same way, but all of them learn better if they have a reference or a visual example in front of them.
Sometimes students don't understand what the teacher says, but if the teacher shows a picture to support what he/she says, it will be more understandable and easier for them to learn.
I really admire your enthusiam and the way you work in the different activities you use in your classes. Nice job!!! God bless you my friend.
