Journal # 3
Teaching Practicum II
Intermediate English I
Teacher: Karen de Orellana

It was my third week and I was happy because it was another experience about teaching.

 Something that I want to talk about the lesson that went well was that I felt motivated because the students showed interest for the classes and as the other classes, they were participating a lot. I noticed that the students liked the way I was explaining the class because they were working in every single activity.

 Something that didn’t go well was that the classroom was too small and there were 15 students; I did not have enough space to do the activities.

 All the students were involved in the activities. We were working in oral activities to make them practice their English. We were discussing about some countries using comparatives. They were comparing different countries and other things.

 I used a few activities in the class, and some materials, but I didn’t use the board too much, and I didn’t use pictures. They were working in some summaries of movies in pieces of paper I carried out to the class.

 I could manage the time very well, and I could do all the activities. The students worked in trios and in pairs. There were some students that could not understand some words from the summaries, and they started asking me for the meaning of those words and finally they could work without any help.

 If I teach that lesson again, I will use a lot of materials because I noticed that when a teacher uses different kinds of materials, the students pay more attention and the class is more meaningful. I will also try to write some difficult words that appear in the book on the board and make them look for the meaning of each word. I will also try to make them give their own opinions about the differences of some places using comparatives.

  1. As you said, it is important to bring visual aids to the classroom because it permits us to create a more meaningful class for the students.

I think that when teachers use the book too much, students are developing just their writing skill, but what about the other skills? It is important to bring different activities. I have noticed at Advanced English that some students have problems when speaking. There is lack of fluency is some of them, and they are still afraid of speaking!!

I like that you are involving all the students in the activities. In this way, you are giving them the same chances to practice the structure. Congrats!!

  2. It is very important to use extra materials in class. Pictures, charts, posters, etc. are very important because they help us to have a very nice environment in the classroom, besides that they help us to clarify what we say to our students.

A picture has a meaningful purpose. All kinds of materials are very interesting to use because they also support the teacher's work.

Well, Edward it sounds like a very interesting class. The way you work is the way your students work. I really admire your attitude when teaching English. The enthusiasm you have shows that you really love what you do. VERY NICE JOB, EDWARD. CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR EFFORT!!

  3. I agree with the girls. When we bring visual aids, we give the impression that we have been preparing for the class and we didn't make everything up at the moment of teaching. For us, it's equal to a good grade in that aspect of evaluation. Also, as you mention, students pay more attention because they want to see what you brought and feel more interested in the class. Good job Edward :)
